Working From Home In 2021

Running your business from home is not for everyone, but since 2020 we have all been forced into working from home. It provides many things that a regular job cannot, and if you run the business alongside your regular job, you can have the best of both worlds. The biggest challenge in running your own business is not in the actual running of it. Where most people struggle is in choosing what kind of business to run! With that being said, there are still important aspects of any business that need to be dealt with effectively in order for your business to become successful.

Take care of these things to help create the success you want for your business:

  1. You have to love what you do. If you find yourself NOT having a passion for what you do, find out what it is you don’t enjoy and either fix it, forget it, change it, or get someone else to do it.If you don’t enjoy what you do, it’s just a matter of time before you quit. This is not like a job where someone is telling you what to do and how to do it. ALL the choices are yours when you run your own business. Choose a different strategy, make a decision, take action, and move on.
  2. Keep your overhead costs low. Working from home is hard to beat in terms of low overhead. No rent to pay, no commute, no staff either. The lower your overhead the quicker you get into profit.
  3. Charge the maximum amount the market will accept. The best time to increase your rate/prices is when you’re doing well. To keep loyal customers, have a modest increase each year for existing clients. Every other business does it. Taxes go up. Food goes up. Gasoline goes up, and so should your rates/prices. Heck look what has happened to housing prices despite the lockdowns and the unemployment rate.
  4. Be efficient with your time. Always be looking to increase your efficiency. If you can increase your efficiency, your profits will increase. It’s easy to waste time when you work from home, and time IS money when you run a home-based business. I am a full time mom and a full time business woman.  I work in the early morning while the kids are at school and I am the most productive at night when they are sleeping.  This is my most creative time of the day.
  5. Be both persistent and consistent. Something I read on linked in; small disciplines repeated every single day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.   In 2016 I started email and calling two very large retailers.  I emailed and called on a weekly bases with no reciprocation.  Eventually the buyer for one of these retailers said they would meet with me.  I flew to New York and met with her.  In our meeting she turned around and said no we are not interested.  I asked her why she has me fly all this way to meet with her and she said well you have been a pain in the rear for so long I wanted to just meet with you tell you in person that it’s not going to work as we do not have a category for this type of product.  When I left I felt somewhat defeated and deflated but regardless I carried on calling and emailing.  This Monday, we will launch our largest collection in one of the largest retailers in the country with our very own category. This is because I consistently knocked on that door until I got a yes.  With all my stores, it’s not just the cold calling and emailing that I did.  I flew to different cities sometimes heavily pregnant or bringing my baby with me as I was nursing.  People need to meet with you a few times before they gain trust.  Committing to consistency leads to trust, and makes people feel they can depend and rely on you and this makes you more likable.
What’s most important is not to get everything right, but to get started. You can adjust and adapt as you go, but most important of all is just to GET GOING. You’ll be glad you did! We have this one life, one chance to make something of ourselves.  Happiness is something we can choose to make.  You owe it to yourself and the people you love to absolutely love what you do, find courage every single day to push through so we can then be our best possible selves with each other.
